Record deal for defender

The Red's are on the verge of breaking their transfer record for a defender. Rafa is about to spend £6.5million on Zenit St Petersburg center-back Martin Skrtel, a Slovakian international. The player is due to have a medical soon after arriving on Merseyside last Sunday. Skrtel is rated as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe. The deal will mark the end of to searches for a new center-half that began with the unsuccessful pursuit of Gabriel Heinze and which became increasingly urgent in recent weeks following injuries to both Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia.

Skrtel has 15 caps for his country and joined Zenit in 2004 and has gone on to make more than 100 appearances in the Russian league. The deal would need to go through as fast as possible to enable the defender to be added to the Liverpool squad, possibly even in time for the trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday. This guys should be able to shore up our defense and hopefully go on to be a great defensive partner with Agger.
